Christ the King will host the celebration of the Red Mass on Thursday, Sept. 13th at 6:00 p.m. Fr. John and clergy from the Temple Deanery will con-celebrate. All parishioners are encouraged to participate in this sacred
occasion.
The Red Mass was first celebrated at Westminster Cathedral in England during the reign of Edward I in around 1310. It invokes the blessing of the Holy Spirit, praying for guidance for judges, lawyers and those in the legal profession. It is called the “Red Mass” because the clergy is vested in red, and originally, the high court judges were robed in red. The first Red Mass in the United States occurred in 1928 at Old St. Andrew’s Church in New York City; now members of the Supreme Court, Congress and the Executive Branch, both Catholic and non-Catholic, attend Red Mass at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.
